Are you acidic?

You will hear a lot about pH when you get started in hydroponics.  You might be acidic or you might be alkaline.

What is pH you might be asking?

pH is the calculation of free ions in the water.  It is measured on a scale of 1-14 with 7 being neutral or pure water.   The low end is acidic and the high end is alkaline.  It is very important for plant growth.  In hydroponics you need good water quality.

When pH is not at its proper level a plant will lose its ability to absorb the nutrients that it needs. Lower absorption can lead to increased susceptability, stunted growth, & even reduced fruit production.  Most plants prefer a slightly acidic growing environment, with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5.  Ideal pH for hydroponics is 5.8.

pH is adjusted by using acid to lower it or an alkali to lower it.

The most inexpensive way and most common way to test the pH is with Test indicators.  Once you know your ph, there are many products out there that  will correct it.  Products that will lower or raise your pH.

When you need to adjust your water, always do it before you add your nutrients.

Hydroponics 101

Hydroponic Germination Station

Hydroponics is growing plants without soil.  It is a very efficient way to provide food and water to your plants.  There’s no worry about soil-born diseases or pests, and there’s no weeding.   You are not dependent on the sun, so you can grow anywhere, anytime.

If you are looking for fresh vegetables year round, hydroponics is your answer. It’s also a great way to grow spices and herbs, and flowers.

There are several factors that influence plant growth in hydroponics:  lighting, temperature, and humidity are three of the main ones.  Nutrient management is another factor that influences your growth.

You may be asking why hydroponics?

  • You get higher yields and bigger plants than in soil
  • plant growth is 50% faster than in soil
  • More efficient use of water and plant food
  • less pests, especially indoors, so less pesticides needed
  • you can grow even in the middle of winter
  • can be as easy or as technologically advanced as you want it to be
  • loads of fun
